I grew up in Waurika, OK and graduated high school in 1995. I attended USAO and earned a BA in Music Education, with a minor in piano, graduating in 1999. While attending college at USAO, I met and married my husband, Steve Sanders. My first 2 years of teaching music was at a K-1st school, Sunset Elementary, in Anadarko, OK. The next year we moved to Austin, TX, where my husband worked for Austin Lyric Opera, and I taught in a 3rd – 5th school in Pflugerville. Although I loved working with the younger students at Anadarko, I found that my time with the older elementary students was very rewarding. Our next move took us to Boston, MA. My husband attended the Opera Institute at Boston University and I taught in Newton, MA at Franklin Elementary. This school was the best of both worlds because I was able to work with K – 6th grades! After 3 years in Boston, we moved to Wood-Ridge, NJ (about 15 mins. West of NYC). I taught 6 years in Nutley, NJ, at a K-5th school, Radcliffe Elementary. We also had a program for children 3 – 8 yrs of age who have autism. They attended music classes every week. I cannot begin to let you know how valuable that experience was and how much it has shaped me as an educator.
Although we enjoyed the East Coast, it was not home. 5 years ago we moved back to my home town, Waurika. We have 2 sons, Carter (8) and Wyatt (4) and are so blessed and excited to be raising them with their extended family! This year will start my 6th year teaching music at Marlow Elementary. I am so excited to be a part of this great school district and I’m looking forward to another fun year with your children!
